Why orbifs
Object storage gives you durable, cheap capacity. orbifs makes it behave like the fast, lockable local drive your CAD and BIM tools expect — without giving up European control of your data.
orbifs appears as an ordinary drive in Windows Explorer and macOS Finder. Project files show up instantly as placeholders and hydrate the moment you open them, so a multi-terabyte project fits on a laptop without filling the disk.
A server-authoritative lock service coordinates who can edit what, with awareness of Revit and AutoCAD workflows. Teammates see live lock state before they open a file, so two people never silently overwrite the same model.
Every file is stored as content-addressed, immutable chunks identified by SHA-256. A file is an ordered list of chunk hashes plus a version pointer, so you can prove a download is byte-for-byte the version you expect.
Immutable versions, anomaly detection on unusual write patterns, and one-click restore mean an infected workstation cannot rewrite history. Roll a project — or a single file — back to any prior point in time.
A local cache keeps recently used chunks on disk, and LAN peers can share chunks with each other. The result is lower latency for the team and less repeated egress from object storage.

Security & compliance
orbifs treats integrity and recoverability as core invariants, not add-ons. Object storage is always the source of truth for file bytes; metadata and lock state live in a separate authoritative store.
Versions are written once and cannot be silently altered or deleted. Object-Lock at the storage layer backs the application's immutable version history, so retained data stays retained.
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. The architecture is designed to support a zero-knowledge-capable mode where the provider cannot read your file contents.
Built in the EU for GDPR. Because content is encrypted and content-addressed, data can be rendered unrecoverable by destroying keys (crypto-shredding) when a retention obligation ends.
Lock events, version writes, restores, and access are recorded so administrators can answer who did what, and when, across a project.
Security descriptions reflect the product's design. orbifs is in active development; specific certifications are not claimed until formally achieved.
